ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH MENTORING PROGRAM

Achievement Through Mentoring (ATM) is an after-school program designed to assist students who are underachieving in the classroom. ATM targets students that may not be performing at grade level in reading and/or mathematics. ATM will also focus on students that may struggle socially. Our goal is to revitalize the student by setting a foundation for high academic achievement while simultaneously providing a fun, innovative, and safe learning environment.

Uniquely, ATM utilizes the energy, youth, and spirit of high school students called Apprentice to deliver our message. These high school volunteers are trained to navigate our character/leadership development curriculum. They are then linked with our Protégé’s (our primary school students) to assist with homework and provide support to our impressionable Protégé’s.  We’ve found that this dynamics of peer-mentoring has a profound effect on the development of struggling students.

Achievement Through Mentoring operates from 2:30pm to 6:00pm and is structured into three interactive and engaging time blocks:

RECREATION

Participants have one hour as soon as they walked through the door to let loose of all their stored energy, they have from a hard day of school. Protégé’s participate in various supervised activities on a daily basis. In today’s society there is a growing concern about obesity and the overall health of our youth. “Rec Time” allows them to have fun while moving and participating in many different forms of cardiovascular activities.

HOMEWORK ASSISTANCE

It is a state law that each student must receive homework! Homework is a very important tool for students and is key to their success and overall grade. In primary schools many students do not consistently complete their homework assignment which does not allow them to retain information, it prohibits students from doing well on their exams. Our Apprentice are trained to assist our Protégé’s with there homework, and study for any possible exams.

CHARACTER/LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

The mentoring sessions are designed for the Protégé & Apprentice (Link) to work together in order to improve one another’s social, and academic skills.  The Apprentice’s primary responsibility is to build a nurturing relationship in their link with their Protégé. Many time students who are underachieving in school lack the appropriate support and attention needed to become successful. The link between the Apprentice and Protégé is designed to provide that support.

The Apprentice will have extensive mentoring and leadership training along with supervisory support in order to provide optimum care for each child.  They will have a curriculum as well as a detailed outline on how to deliver each workshop.

FEATURED LEAGUES

These leagues are designed to provide an additional outlet and resource for those students attending middle school. In order to participate one must attend one of the participating schools.

Community Awareness Basketball League

This league was developed because of a childhood argument between friends the attended different schools in the community and debated about what would happen if they ever were to face one another on the basketball court.

The league features eight of the neighboring elementary schools (public and private) with an 8th grade. The league is co-ed and, the participating schools range from various parts of the Queens area (East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Astoria, Flushing, and Long Island City).
